Kraft Foods is preparing to extend its Fairtrade initiative to South Africa, where it will begin manufacturing Fairtrade products at its local manufacturing facilities, just-food can reveal.

Sean Murphy, managing director of Kraft Foods’ operations in southern Africa, told just-food that the programme will initially focus on chocolate production at the company’s Port Elizabeth facility. It will include the Cadbury confectionery brands as well as Royal baking products and Kraft biscuit products produced in South Africa.

“The Fairtrade programme is an excellent programme to invest in African cocoa farmers,” Murphy said yesterday (30 May). “We will start with cocoa but we have plans to move to a wider range of products. It is not a programme where you just focus on one area. It is a commitment to local communities. As we can build the resources and the local farming communities are able to make Fairtrade commitments, then we would like to work with them to move in that direction.”
