An established South African tea can offer more than 50% more antioxidants than green tea, according to Alvaro Viljoen, from the pharmacy department at the University of the Witwatersrand. Speaking to WebMD, Viljoen added that the tea is also extremely rich in vitamin C, while being caffeine-free and low in tannins: “If you don’t capture a market with those attractions, I don’t think much else will sell it.”

The Rooibos tea brand is produced using Aspalathus Linearis, a shrub indigenous to the mountainous region near the Cape of Good Hope. In South Africa it is sometimes used as a milk substitute for colicky babies, and the health benefits now appear to be the same, if not better, than more established teas.
The tea has been commercial produced for nearly 100 years, and is currently available in Japan, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Holland, and the UK. It will hit shelves in the US market soon.
