South African food, clothing and household goods retailer Woolworths has reported a 13.7% increase in sales for the six months from July to December 2003.

The retailer said sales from comparable stores, including local and international franchises) rose 7.5% compared to the year-ago period.
Total food sales rose 17.7%, or 7.0% on a comparable store basis. The company said food sales were slightly ahead of expectations during the festive season, reported Dow Jones International News.
Woolworths said it is due to publish its interim results for the 26 weeks to 28 December in mid-February.
