Only meat produced on the southern island of Cheju is being exported, the South Korean agriculture ministry said yesterday [Monday].


Exports were put on ice at the beginning of 2000 when an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in cattle prompted import bans from Japan, which buys nearly all of South Korea’s pork exports.


“Three Korean exporters in Cheju Island on Tuesday shipped 40 tonnes of pork worth US$118,000 to Japan,” a statement from the agriculture ministry said.
