Some 96% of the meat brought into South Korea by travellers returning home failed quarantine test, according to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service. The service is hoping now to dissuade tourists from bringing meat products home from foreign countries. Quarantine certificates, it says, are extremely difficult to obtain.

Last month alone, officials at Kimpo International Airport confiscated 2,512kg out of the 2,665kg of mainly beef, sausage and turkey carried by passengers after examinations were carried out. The service revealed that of the meat confiscated, only 17.8kg originated in Europe, where fears over the safety of beef have been raised by mad cow disease.
