The South Korean Government has begun the process of resuming beef imports from the US after trade was blocked last month following the discovery of a third cow infected with BSE in the states.

According to a report in KBS World News, the Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry said yesterday (25 April) said that investigations have concluded that the infected cow was born before April 1998, after which the US established a system of safeguards to prevent the disease spreading.
Before imports are permitted, the department will conduct a two-week long inspection of US beef exports that had been scheduled to be completed before the disease was detected. If the ministry’s findings are satisfactory, US beef imports will resume in June.
