“We plan to develop canned dog meat tonic juice, which football fans can enjoy in their stadium seats while watching games,” said Han-Gwon. He denied, however, local reports that the association he heads up would offer dog meat burgers or sandwiches to visiting football fans.
However, Canada’s Globe and Mail reported on Saturday that a group of 150 South Korean restaurant owners had said they would offer World Cup tourists free samples of steamed meat, soup, sandwiches and hamburgers all made of dog meat.
“Our campaign is aimed at advertising our traditional food to foreigners to dispel their prejudices about our food culture,” the association is reported as saying in a statement.
There are an estimated 6000 dog meat restaurants in South Korea. When the country hosted the 1988 Olympic Games, dog meat restaurants were ordered to close or move to the backstreets.
