French retail giant Carrefour has teamed up with UK-based ethnic food company Shere Khan to introduce hot food counters into a handful of its Spanish stores.
The aim of the venture is to target the thousands of British expatriates living in Spain who may have been unable to get hold of popular curry dishes, which are eaten widely back home in Britain.
Customers will be able to buy hot and chilled takeaway curries from three Carrefour stores on the Costa Blanca. The three stores are in Alicante, Benidorm and Torreviejo, and will form a trial for possible expansion to a further 26 stores in southern Spain.
“Europe is slowly catching on to the curry phenomenon, helped on by demand from British communities abroad; the Carrefour model is a great platform for us to launch the ‘Shere Khan Kitchen’ concept into similar European markets in the future,” said Shere Khan’s chief executive, Nighat Awan.
Carrefour will also stock the Shere Khan range of cooking sauces in 26 of its hypermarkets in Spain.
