Spanish food industry lobby FIAB is considering appealing a EUR500,000 (U$750,000) fine after the country’s competition authorities accused it of price fixing.

According to the Spanish competition authorities, FIAB and other groups collaborated force through price increases. In total, the organisations were fined EUR1.3m.

However, FIAB officials said one of its press releases, issued in June 2007, alerted consumers about the fact that sky rocketing raw-material prices would require food companies to raise prices and urged the government to intervene.

“We only wanted to express our concern about the situation and avoid problems for our members,” said one official.
