Four fifths of the workforce at Spain#;s Copaga joined in a weekend protest against layoffs at the company.

More than 200 of the food and meat processing company in Llerida, north-east Spain, demonstrated against the company#;s announcement that it will make 116 of the 247 employees in its meat processing plant in Llerida redundant.

The protesting employees demonstrated in front of the Copaga plant, before proceeding to reconvene at the Llerida headquarters of the CCOO trade union. CCOO will continue to support the employees, reported La Vanguadia.

Copaga recently decided to close its plant in Llerida after it incurred losses of €600,000 (US$568,000), since the beginning of 2002.
