The retailer, owned by France’s Auchan, will promote the “responsible” use of plastic bags in outlets in four Spanish cities through stands informing shoppers to properly use and recycle them.

The actions will also take place in Madrid where the effort started last week as part of a broader campaign called “Recycle me, don’t abandon me,” which is being led by big energy-consuming businesses.

Archrival Eroski, which has launched green campaigns in the past, would not comment on future plans.

An Al Campo spokesperson said shoppers would have the option to buy 100% green-coloured recycled bags. The company will place recycling containers in all its stores, while also launching tree-planting and re-planting campaigns in selective outlets.
