Heura, a Spain-based plant-based meat business, has announced its entry into the UK market.

The Barcelona-based company, which promotes itself as a ‘clean’ ingredients manufacturer, has launched its plant-based ‘chicken’ in the UK at two specialist grocers –  The Vegan Kind and Planet Organic – but a spokesperson for the company said it is holding “positive” discussions with “three major retailers”.

UK consumers can purchase three of the brand’s most popular products, vegetable chicken bites, Mediterranean chicken bites and strips.

Heura, which was established in 2017, manufactures plant-based chicken made from European soy, olive oil, salt and spices. 

The company points out its  products contains the same amount of protein as traditional chicken, with only one third of the fat.

“And at a time when demand for ‘clean’ vegan products is increasing, Heura’s products also contain fewer ingredients than the market average,” it said.

In August, Heura announced it had signed a distribution deal in Scandinavia to add to the seven countries in which it is already present.

The company generated turnover of EUR2.5m (US$2.9m) in 2019.
