Swedish retailer Axfood plans to “change and limit” its purchase of palm oil for private label products, in a move designed to help protect rain forests in south-east Asia.

The use of palm oil is controversial, since in many locations, oil palm plantations are located on land that was once rainforest.

Axfood will join the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and buy certificates for the palm oil that is purchased for use in its private label products. This, the group said, will ensure that the palm oil it uses is sourced from suppliers who use more sustainable production methods.

In addition, palm oil will be replaced with other vegetable oils in a number of products, such as cooking oil and chips.
