Sweden could extend the number of products that are subject to mandatory requirements for vitamin D fortification under new proposals from the Swedish National Food Agency.

Currently skimmed and semi-skimmed milk and margarine products must be fortified with vitamin D in the country. The NFA has suggested expanding this to include additional fluid milk products and vegetable drinks as well as cooking fats and oils. Liquid milk without added sugar and with a fat content of up to 3% would be subject to the fortification obligations.

The proposals are open for consultation and comment until 5 June.

The NFA explained that "many people" in Sweden "do not get enough" vitamin D because more of the nutrient needs to be obtained through food due to the low levels of sunlight in Nordic countries. "Therefore the NFA proposes that more food than before to be enriched with extra vitamin D."
