Switzerland has asked the European Commission to register the name of well-known Swiss cheese Gruyère under regulations covering the protected designation of origin of products.

The request was made less than two weeks after France made a similar request in respect of cheese of the same name. Brussels said the requests were “co-coordinated” but referred to different cheeses.

EU legislation provides for the “registration of homonymous names for different products provided some rules are respected”, said EU food spokesman Johan Reyniers.

The requests will be scrutinised by the Commission under and details of the requests for registration will be published on the Internet. Brussels said the process “will not take more than 12 months.”
