Swiss authorities have reportedly opened up an investigation into local meat processor Carna Grischa after claims it breached labelling regulations, including passing horsemeat off as beef.
Swiss publication Sonntags Blick alleged the company had made a string of labelling violations, including selling horsemeat labelled as beef. Since horsemeat is allowed for human consumption in Switzerland, mislabelling in this way is less likely to have the impact it did in countries like the UK last year. However, the claims have put the company – and the wider issue of food labelling – in the spotlight .

The publication also stated Swiss prices were being charged for Hungarian meat labelled as Swiss, and previously frozen meat sold as fresh, as well as the alteration of expiry dates.
According to local press, the firm has conceded some “irregularities” were found in an internal investigation, but these were “isolated incidents”.
Carna Grischa did not respond to requests for comment when approached by just-food.
