Sales of organic products in Switzerland were up 13% year-on-year in 2002 at 1.06bn Swiss francs (US$765.7m), according to Swiss organic producers’ organisation Bio Suisse.

The amount of money on average that each person in Switzerland spent on organic products during 2002 was 144 Swiss francs.


Sales through Swiss retailers Migros and Coop together accounted for around 75% of sales of organic goods in the country, reported the Swiss News Digest.


The number of farmers producing organic products was up 6% year-on-year. Almost 6,500 Swiss farmers now have the Bourgeon label, which is awarded by Bio Suisse to indicate if a product is organic, applied to their products.
