Per capita consumption of chocolate products inched down by 600g to 11.3kg per year, reported Edicom. This put overall national consumption at 83,884 tonnes.


In a country in which excellent chocolate manufacturers abound, foreign chocolate products managed to increase their share of the market from 22.7% in 2002 to 24.2%. For the first time ever, at 51.1%, sales of Swiss chocolate products abroad were higher than domestic sales, which fell by 6.5% to 68,280 tonnes. Germany and the UK accounted for 22% and 12% respectively of these exports. While France and the US accounted for 10% and 3% in turn.


Turnover from chocolate exports rose 3.2% to SFr486m (US$359.1m). Turnover from domestic sales slumped 5.8% to SFr762m.
