The number of convenience stores in Taiwan is expected to grow to around 6,300 by the end of this year, a significant rise from around 5,700 at the end of 2001.
The biggest convenience store operator in Taiwan, 7-Eleven, expects to have 3,200 stores by the end of the year. The company is reported to be planning a move away from its past strategy of focusing on metropolitan areas by setting up stores in suburban and rural areas. The 7-Eleven chain in Taiwan is expected to achieve year-on-year sales growth of 11.6% this year to TN$64.78bn (US$1.9bn).
Family Mart expects to have 1,305 stores in Taiwan by the end of the year and is forecasting 2002 sales growth of 19.7% to $21.8bn.
Hi Life, which has 807 stores in Taiwan, is predicting 2002 domestic sales growth of 20.8% to $14.5bn.
Meanwhile the OK chain, which operates 657 stores in Taiwan, has forecast 2002 sales growth of 16.3% to $10bn, reported the Taiwan Economic News.
