Score Supermarkets is to sell its operations in Tanzania to Shoprite Checkers.

The price of the transaction was not disclosed, but Score managing director Ian Eadie said that disruption to operations would be kept to a minimum. Employees would not be affected by the change of store ownership.
The deal comprises Score’s three supermarkets in and around Dar es Salaam, along with a small distribution facility also operated by the group.
Score remains active in several African countries, and has stated its aim of focusing its operations on southern Africa, notably South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland.
“In keeping with our focus, we have reviewed the market in Mozambique and indications are that an expansion of Score into Mozambique is a distinct possibility,” said Eadie.
