He added that the two centres, to be located in the Thai capital of Bangkok and the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, would not develop final consumer brands.

Fuji expects the initiative will double its Asia sales to JPY6.2bn (US$77m) by March 2014. The company has experience of this approach, having already opened two R&D centres in Singapore and Shanghai.

Earlier this month, Fuji opened a customer service centre in Bangkok to analyse local market trends. Construction for a margarine plant in Rayong province also began the same day.

In China, Fuji’s operation in the city of Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province recently started making 11 new products developed by its subsidiary in Europe, including chocolate and custard.
