The Thai government has made an urgent plea to its trade representatives in the Eurpean Union to clarify misunderstandings that may have arisen following a report in a national UK newspaper that claimed chicken shipped from Thailand may be contaminated with BSE.

The Guardian newspaper report (click here for more details) indicated that chicken shipped to the Netherlands from Thailand and Brazil was often altered by a process known as “tumbling,” wherein beef proteins were added to the chicken meat to make it absorb more water, before being sent to other markets.
The Thai government said: “Thai chicken raisers never use additives that could lead to BSE contamination” and urged their overseas representatives to do all in their power to maintain the reputation of Thai poultry.
