Thai supermarket chain Tesco Lotus, majority owned by UK retail giant Tesco, plans to introduce an online ordering service as part of its expansion plans.

Michael Raycraft, CEO of Ek-Chai Distribution, which operates the chain, said online shopping with delivery services nationwide would be possible once the coverage of information technology in Thailand has improved and it may be around five years before the market is ready for an extensive service, reported the Bangkok Post. However, the plan may be viable sooner if the Thai government’s programme to promote IT with low-cost computers goes ahead.

Tesco Lotus recently announced plans to build six new stores this year, at a cost of 7bn baht (US$167m).
