Carrefour has announced plans to acquire Turkish supermarket chain Ipek in a deal valued at about EUR24m (US$29.8m).

Ipek operates 27 supermarkets in and around Istanbul and last year the company posted sales of around EUR41m.

The French-based retailer is already present in Turkey with through a local partner, Sabanci, via holding companies CarrefourSA and DiaSA, in which Carrefour has holdings of around 60%.

Carrefour’s Turkish sales were worth EUR1.3bn in 2009 and the company runs 26 hypermarkets, 165 supermarkets and 675 discount stores in the market.

If the deal is approved by the Turkish authorities, the Ipek outlets will be rebranded as Carrefour Express and Carrefour Market stores.
