Claims of racism at the company first emerged last month after alleged racial abuse at a 2 Sisters site in Smethwick, Birmingham.

2 Sisters suspended some 60 employees who took unofficial action to back the plant’s shop steward, who had been earlier suspended for supporting the victim of the alleged abuse.

Talks between 2 Sisters and the Unite union were held but the union claimed today (16 October) that the food group had “sacked” 59 workers for “challenging racism and defending union representatives”.

2 Sisters, however, said the union’s claims were “so wholly inaccurate and grossly misleading that they are tantamount to bullying”.

The company said: “The claim that racism is at the heart of this action is absurd. 2 Sisters does not tolerate racism, any form of racial discrimination or racial abuse from any member of its workforce.”

It added: “A thorough investigation has been concluded and all employees that partook in illegal and unconstitutional strike action have been dismissed.”
