The Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF) Review of Feed labelling has been welcomed by the Food Standards Agency yesterday. The report deals with two aspects of feed labelling: ingredient listing and GM labelling. It makes a number of recommendations which will be subject to wider consultation.

The report also raises concerns that consumers could be misled by claims about the absence of GM material in feed. This issue will be looked at further by the Agency who are calling together consumer, retail, feed industry and enforcement bodies to seek views on a practical way forward.
A meeting is being planned for late July. Details of the outcome will be published on the Agency website.
Materials derived from GM crops are widely used in animal feed in the UK. All these crops will have been subject to a safety assesment.

ACAF advises the Food Standards Agency, DEFRA, the Scottish Executive, the National Assembly for Wales and the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development (NI) on the safety and use of animal feeds and feeding practices.
