UK master chef Egon Ronay has seen his contract with BAA to improve the standards of food available at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports end after ten years.

Ronay was first challenged by BAA to improve the standards in 1990, after he described the available food at the airports as “fit only for the dustbin” in his column in the Sunday Times newspaper. The decision not to renew the contract was mutual, said Ronay.
Through his Egon Ronay Foundation, the chef will still work on quality control for JD Wetherspoon pubs and Welcome Break motorway restaurants.
A spokeswoman from BAA told the caterer.com: “We will continue the extensive customer research which has been developed and extended… together with our own independent quality assessments.”
