The appointment of Chris Lawson as the new Chief Executive of the Meat Hygiene Service was announced yesterday. The Meat Hygiene Service is a next steps Agency of the Food Standards Agency.



Mr Lawson, who has been acting Chief Executive of the MHS since January this year, takes up the permanent post from today.


Announcing the appointment Geoffrey Podger, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency said:


” I am pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Lawson as the new Chief Executive of the Meat Hygiene Service. He has a wealth of experience in consumer protection and meat issues. I have every confidence that Chris will be a success in this very demanding post.”


Mr Lawson had previously been Head of Meat Hygiene Division in the Food Standards Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). He has worked in a number of areas of MAFF and its Agency’s including Veterinary Medicines Directorate where he worked for some 5 years. He began his civil service career in 1970 as a Livestock Husbandry Advisor in the National Agricultural Advisory Service after graduating with a degree in agriculture from Newcastle upon Tyne University.

  3. Chris Lawson succeeds Johnston McNeill who joined the Common Agricultural Policy Paying Agency in January 2001.

  4. The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) is an Executive Agency of the Food Standards Agency. It was first established as an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF) on 1 April 1995 when it took over meat inspection duties from some 300 local authorities.

  5. The principle objective of the MHS is to ensure the hygienic production of meat and meat products whilst maintaining animal welfare at slaughter. The MHS operates in England, Scotland and Wales.
