UK supermarket chain Asda has announced £117m (US$219.5m) worth of price cuts, including £17m worth of price cuts on healthier foods.

The company, part of US retail titan Wal-Mart, said it is investing more than £17m to reduce the price of its Good For You! healthier foods range, which it has almost doubled in size to more than 400 products, and dozens of branded products including Evian water and Weight Watchers ready meals.

In addition, Asda said it is embarking on a £7m health promotion campaign that will include TV and press advertising and the launch of a new quarterly health magazine called Good For You!, which will have a minimum circulation of one million copies. The company also plans to provide 110,000 free health checks by qualified nurses in its 271 stores across Britain.

Asda said its entire range of Smartprice economy food has also been reformulated to reduce the amount of sugar, salt and fat without affecting the price.
