UK retailer Asda has introduced its first mobile app that allows consumers to shop via their handsets.

Asda said today (17 November) that the app would allow iPhone users to buy groceries online and price check the cost of their shopping. The move follows the launch of the retailers mobile-optimised site in August.

Customers can shop and amend an existing order or delivery slot up until 10pm the day before their delivery is due. The app also has an integrated scanner enabling customers to quickly add new products to their basket by simply scanning the barcode.

Asda claimed the app was “unique” in enabling shoppers to price check on the move – bringing in the existing Asda Price Guarantee iPhone app first launched last October. Customers can use details from store or online delivery receipts to check the cost of their Asda groceries against its rivals.

Kate Cuthbertson, Asda’s head of mobile strategy, said: “More than 60% of customers who access the Asda.com mobile website do so using iPhones, so we’ve created an app that allows them to shop – and price check – on the move. Our mobile strategy is moving at pace with more new developments planned into the New Year.”

The retailer said it was working on an app for Android customers.
