Bakkavor, one of the largest convenience food makers in the UK, is poised to cut 300 jobs from its workforce in the country, the Unite union has warned.

The group, which supplies pizza, ready meals and salads to some of the UK’s largest retailers, is set to shed staff as its site in Bourne, Unite said today (14 October).

The union said workers met yesterday to confirm that they are “not prepared to stand by while jobs are shed on this scale”.

Unite national officer Jennie Formby said: “Unite is determined to find credible alternatives for the management and committed to do all we can at every level to protect the jobs and conditions of our members. “Bakkavor must not repay its UK workforce by slashing their jobs and wages, so we urge them to sit down and work with the union because it is nobody’s interest to allow these potential problems to escalate.”

Bakkavor could not be reached for immediate comment but Unite said there remains two months to run on a 90-day “consultation” period.
