Bakkavor subsidiary English Village Salads (EVS) has launched a consultation on the future of the UK business following “a sustained period of reduced demand”.

The Newport, East Yorkshire-based firm, said earlier this week that it has begun talks with employee representatives to discuss “the ongoing viability of the business operation”. As part of the process, EVP will consult with all 134 hourly paid staff and 44 salaried staff.

In June, own-label manufacturer Bakkavor warned that over 100 EVS staff could face losing their jobs after Asda moved a “substantial part” of its salads procurement to what the supplier called the retailer’s “in-house operation”.

Bakkavor said the 90-day consultation comes on the back of the June announcement.

“This, combined with the ongoing challenging trading environment has continued to have a significant effect on the volume of business managed through EVS throughout the remainder of 2011,” the company said in a statement.

The firm added that it will “consider all representations” made on behalf of its employees.
