The company said it has been working closely with local authorities, contract caterers and school meals organisations to ensure its products meet the new requirements.

“Over the past two years, we have been very active in redeveloping our offering for school caterers, to make sure our new lines answer not only the caterers’ needs but also the needs of nutritionists, parents, head teachers, governors and, most importantly of all, those of the consumers – the children.” says Lesley Simkins, marketing manager at Bernard Matthews Food Service.

Simkins added that the company’s new range of products not only reflects parents’ and schools’ concerns over diet and nutrition but also meets the tightest of the government’s nutritional guidelines.

Bernard Matthews Food Service says its new products “tick all the boxes” with regard to criteria such as quality, nutrition, natural muscle, Omega 3, lower fat and lower salt and multi meat protein supply, whilst still providing plenty of child appeal.  For example, the Bernard Matthews Food Service Ingredients Range is ideal for kitchen-prepared dishes at school, the company said. The range includes Diced Turkey Thigh, Diced Turkey Breast, Turkey Mince and Lamb Mince.

The company has also put a wide range of recipe ideas using the Ingredients Range on CD to encourage school caterers to create fresh cooked meals.

The company’s research showed that while there was widespread support for the provision of healthier school food, many school catering organisations lacked the resources or time to prepare food from scratch. Therefore they still need hot, healthy menu options that need little or no preparation and can be oven-baked or grilled quickly and easily, the company said.
