UK frozen food manufacturer Birds Eye Iglo will stop the production of frozen peas in Lowestoft after the loss of an export contract with Unilever in Italy.

Almost half of the company’s pea suppliers will be affected by the news and the group is cancelling 180 supply contracts with farmers in East Anglia.

“It is with great regret that due to the recent and sudden loss of a substantial export contract with Unilever in Italy, we are to cease pea production in the Lowestoft area,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

“We have informed our grower and processing partners in Lowestoft and the five members of our agricultural team who will be affected. We will be working with them to minimise the impact.”

The company declined to comment further or provide details of the financial impact the loss of the Unilever supply contract is likely to have on its business.

“That is all the information we are able to announce at this early stage,” the spokesperson said.

Officials at Unilever Italy could not be reached for immediate comment.
