Scientists from the University’s School of Psychology studied 500 healthy volunteers, who kept a ten-week diary of illnesses. As well as noting their physical symptoms, the participants were also asked to record how any illness affected their memory, attention span and general mood

The Cardiff study, unveiled to mark the start of the UK’s National Science Week on Friday, found a clear pattern between eating breakfast and general good health.

“We found that those who had more than one illness were less likely to eat breakfast,” lead researcher Professor Andy Smith, told the Daily Mail.

He added: “The 188 participants who developed colds were also more likely to drink and smoke than those who remained healthy.  Not only that, but smokers and participants who had a lot of stress in their lives became ill more quickly than non-smokers.”
