The confectioner said Bonfield, 46, will join the company in February as CFO-designate and take over as CFO from Ken Hanna when he leaves the business in April.
Bonfield was most recently CFO at pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb, which owns US infant food firm Mead Johnson Nutrition Co.
His previous roles include a spell as executive director of finance at natural gas company BG Group and CFO at SmithKline Beecham, prior to its merger with Glaxo Wellcome.
Cadbury said in October that Hanna would leave to join car retailer Inchcape.
