Meat from livestock vaccinated against foot and mouth disease will not carry labels within the European Union declaring that they are from injected animals, even after the passage of the anticipated EU FMD directive, EU health and consumer affairs Commissioner David Byrne has said.

He told the European Parliament that the legislation would allow for vaccination, adding: “Consumers will, however, also have to accept that if vaccination is to be a more viable option it must be accompanied by an acceptance that the meat and products from vaccinated animals can be safely eaten.”
Byrne also welcomed recent Commission proposals that would reduce the risk of travellers importing contaminated foodstuffs in personal baggage, effectively banning them from carrying food from outside the EU, with the exception, under strict conditions, of infant milk, infant food and foods needed for medical reasons.
