A new programme designed to improve careers advice for members of farming families is being piloted by the Welsh Development Agency Food Directorate in Mid Wales.
The programme kicks off on Thursday November 30, with an Agri-Food Careers Workshop at Celtica in Machynlleth.

Those who work with young people in schools and colleges have been invited to the event, which is being supported by Powys Careers Guidance Service and CWYSI.
“The aim is to help those involved in careers guidance help people from farming families or from rural areas to make good career decisions,” explained Kevin Thomas, the WDA agri-food co-ordinator for Mid Wales.
“We want to ensure that those people who advise them are aware of the opportunities available, and know where to go for up-to-date advice.”
He continued: “The issue is of particular importance in Mid Wales where farming has always been a main employer of young people. Hopefully if this proves successful it will expand to cover the whole of Wales.”

By GlobalDataTo help schools and colleges release their teachers, the WDA is offering to pay the cost of supply cover.
Alun Jones of CWYSI explained that the organisation was established six years ago to help farming families adjust positively to the changes taking place in agriculture.
He added: “The aim of this event is to assist members of farming families to make informed decisions about their careers and lifelong learning.
“Participants will be made aware of the issues facing farming families and have the opportunity to contribute towards developing information and literature that they can use within their daily work.”
The conference will include a short dramatic piece from Young Farmers’ Club actors, as well as a number of speakers including Jo Banks of Cardiff University; Catherine Rees, Menter a Busnes, as well as representatives from Powys Careers Guidance, Mid Wales TEC and Lantra.
