The UK’s Conservative-Liberal coalition government today (20 May) insisted it will reduce red tape for farmers and small businesses but increase regulation of the grocery supply chain.

In a 34-page policy document crafted over the past nine days, the Conservative-led coalition said that it had created a blueprint for a “radical, reforming government”.

The new government said it would look to cut red tape for farmers and small businesses.

“We will reduce the regulatory burden on farmers by moving to a risk-based system of regulation,” the document read.

It also pledged to reduce governmental oversight for small businesses, including the promise to “find a practical way to make small business rate relief automatic” and review employment practices.

On food policy, the Government said that it would introduce “honesty in food labelling” so that consumers can “be confident about where their food comes from and its environmental impact”.

It also confirmed pre-election pledges from both parties to establish an ombudsman to oversee the relationship between retailers and suppliers.

“We will introduce, as a first step, an Ombudsman in the Office of Fair Trading  who can proactively enforce the Grocery Supply Code of Practice and curb abuses of power, which undermine our farmers and act against the long-term interest of consumers,” the coalition said.
