Bacteria cause urinary infections in up to 60% of women at some point in their lives, and researchers in the paediatric department of the university have shown that the medicinal role of cranberry in clearing up the infection is down to the tannins in the juice.

The study involved tracing three groups of 50 volunteers who had suffered from such an infection, and who were told to consume either nothing, a commercial probiotic drink daily for a year or cranberry juice every day for six months. In the group who consumed neither, 18 suffered from a recurrence of the infection. This was one better than in the group who consumed the probiotic drink, in which 19 became ill again.

In the group consuming cranberry juice however, only eight volunteers had another bout of the infection.

The scientists also say that the study proved that by drinking cranberry to help with infection, consumes can reduce their need for antibiotics, and thus counter the body’s resistance to antibiotics that is built up through overuse.
