The funding will enable additional State Veterinary Service vets to be drafted in to help clear the backlog of bovine TB tests on cattle herds. TB was suspended during the foot and mouth (FMD) outbreak in order to minimise the risk that FMD could have been brought on farm by visiting vets.

Latest figures released by DEFRA this week show that the backlog of tests has fallen from its height of 27,000 herds to just over 18,000 herds at the end of June. In the month of June the backlog was reduced by 2,000 tests.

Morley welcomed the additional funding, saying it was important the backlog of tests was cleared as quickly as possible.

“The State Veterinary Service and local veterinary inspectors have been working extremely hard, with the assistance of the livestock sector, to clear the extensive backlog of overdue tests caused by FMD. The additional funding will help speed up the process. This is a welcome boost for the industry,” he added.
