The new product will be competing with brands including Dean Foods’ Alpro but a Delamere spokesperson said soya was a “growing market” and insisted there was an “opportunity for another brand to do well”.

Delamere said research from Kantar Worldpanel showed soya was popular with the over 45 age group. However, the company is targeting a younger customer base with the aim of giving dairy alternatives a more mainstream appeal.

The milk is available in sweetened and unsweetened varieties in one-litre cartons in Asda stores from today (24 October) with an introductory offer of GBP1.00 (US$1.59).
