Professor David King warned however that there was a still a lot of work to be done before foot and mouth was eradicated. The number of confirmed cases of the highly contagious disease is expected to hit 1000 by the end of today.

King had warned two weeks ago that half the UK’s livestock would have to be culled, but latest predictions from the scientific advisor are more optimistic. He cited that progress has been made towards reducing the time from report of infection to slaughter to 24 hours – a target still being missed in the worst-hit parts of the country, notably Cumbria.

Meanwhile, the EU is lifting restrictions on exports of milk and meat to Europe from most parts of Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
