Cook-in-pack convenience food specialist Eatwell (UK) ltd has invested £1.2m (US$1.7m) in a new plant at Knowsley, Merseyside to meet the growing demand for its hand held burger, hotdog and steak sandwich products.

The new plant was opened by George Howarth MP, whose parliamentary constituency is Knowsley North.

At the recent IGD Food Industry Awards, the company won the Tetra Pak Packaging award for consumer marketing for its Pressure Pack Cooking (PPC) method that delivers snacks straight from the microwave. The new facility is well placed to support Eatwell’s national distribution network and has room to grow to meet further demand in this fast moving sector.

Cook-in-pack or heat ‘n eat  snacks is a strong seasonal food sector that is growing in popularity as the market tires of the multitude of sandwich options. Eatwell’s claim of ‘restaurant quality snacks’, if deliverable consistently, will place it well to gain further share in this competitive sector.
