Leighton, who left the British grocery subsidiary of US giant Wal-Mart in early spring last year, has been the subject of much press speculation as to his future career moves. A man who lists Morris dancing, football and cricket amongst his hobbies, Leighton currently holds several other posts, including the chairs of BHS retail group and e-tailer Lastminute.com.

Leighton has been a non-executive director for Consignia, formally called The Post Office, since last April, for which he receives £20,000 (US$28,600) a year, plus expenses. This salary will remain unchanged as he holds the new post for a short term.

A spokesman for Consignia told the Daily Telegraph that Leighton would spend one day a week in the office to support CEO John Roberts. “It is completely down to Allan whether or not he applies [for the post of chairman],” he said: “As far as I know, he hasn’t indicated what he intends to do.

“We are very pleased that he has undertaken the role. How long he will do it for is a piece-of-string question.”
