Fairtrade brands of coffee now account for 14% of the total UK roast and ground coffee market, according to figures released to mark the start of Fairtrade Fortnight, which aims to encourage shoppers to buy more Fairtrade products.


In 2002 the retail value of Fairtrade food sales in the UK reached £62.6m (US$100m). The UK drinks 1.7 million cups of Fairtrade tea, coffee and cocoa each day and eats 1.5 million Fairtrade bananas each week.


More than 100 products in the UK now carry the Fairtrade Mark, including coffee, chocolate, biscuits, sugar, honey and fresh fruit.


UK supermarkets Sainsbury’s and the Co-op now both sell their own brand fair trade chocolate. The Co-op has actually switched all its own-brand chocolate to Fairtrade.
