The new packaging is being rolled out from this month at a number of retailers, including the Co-op, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda.

Plans are also in place to move the company’s Lake District Cheese Company and Mull of Kintyre brands into re-closable packaging early in 2009, the dairy group added.

“Consumers use a number of selection criteria when they are shopping the cheese fixture including design, price and taste experience. However, packaging is becoming increasingly important as shoppers look for more value,” Richard Hollingdale, sales and marketing director for First Milk’s cheese division, said.

“This convenient re-closable format hits the spot as people aim to reduce food waste and eliminate the need for re-packaging at home,” he added.
