The ‘milk type’ products under consideration include skimmed, semi-skimmed and vegetable-based milk variants, while the ‘yoghurt type’ products include a range of natural and fruit-flavoured yoghurts.

Both types would include phytosterol-esters, the Agency said. The cholesterol-lowering effect of phytosterols has been demonstrated and is similar to that seen in ‘yellow Fat Spreads’ containing this ingredient, such as Unilever’s Flora Pro-Activ. Indeed it is Unilever that has submitted this latest application.
