Tetra Pak, the packaging giant, has said that up to 75% of its cartons used by food and beverage firms in the UK and Ireland will use paperboard made from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The company said today (22 October) that own-label milk and juice on sale at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and the Co-operative Group stores would be able to use the FSC label. Brand-owners like Princes will also be able to put the label on their products.
“We know a sustainable approach to business is of critical value to retailers, brands and consumers, and FSC certification demonstrates our commitment to manufacturing to the highest level of environmental performance,” said Tetra Pak executive vice president for commercial operations Nils Björkman.
A Tetra Pak spokesperson told just-food it was the group’s “ultimate goal” to have all the paper in the company’s packaging “certified to the highest standard – currently set by the FSC”.
However, she declined to comment on any timetable to take Tetra Pak’s cartons in the UK and Ireland from 75% to 100% certified by the FSC.
