Irish food manufacturer Kerry Group is reportedly leading the race to acquire meat snack brand Peperami from Unilever.

Weekend reports have suggested Kerry is closing in on a deal to acquire Peperami.

Kerry has been linked to a potential deal since rumours of the sale emerged this summer. Through its UK subsidiary, Mattessons, Kerry manufactures processed-meat based products including the Fridge Raiders brand.

Peperami is manufactured by Unilever in Germany, Mexico and the UK. In Germany it trades under the name BiFi.

It is believed Unilever is mulling the potential sale as part of its drive to focus on “fewer, bigger brands” and rationalise its brand portfolio.

In an interview with just-food in October, Unilever CEO Paul Polman said Peperami “could be” the next brand on the block following recent disposals including the Skippy peanut butter brand in the US.

Pundits believe other trade potential bidders include Bernard Matthews Farms, 2 Sisters Food Group and Marfrig’s European arm Moy Park.

A spokesperson for Unilever declined to comment.
